Kitesurf Cumbuco - Guide
The conditions of Cumbuco beach are truly wonderful for kitesurfers of all levels, there is a small shore dump and then flat water with slight sea swell. Cumbuco beach is one of the world’s most idyllic bays for kitesurfing.
The beach of Cumbuco has two main sections, the upwind bay stretches from Barraca Cumbuco Beach 2km downwind to the point of the village.
The centre of the village has Bars and Restaurants along the beach, its narrow at high tide and there can be lots of swimmers so its best to either kite upwind or downwind of this small 1km stretch.
The shore dump can, at high tide and when the swell is big reach 1m (only a few times a year, mainly Jan onwards) but normally is less than ½m and there is only one line of breaking waves.
At low tide there are sand bars off the point that produce some nice waves around 300-400 hundred meters from the shore.
From the center of the village you can make a great 8km downwinder to the Cauipe Lagoon which is a large freshwater lagoon fed by a small tributary river, the lagoon is separated from the sea by 200m of sandy beach.
The wind blows onto the lagoon very consistently and is not gusty, it blows onto the lagoon allowing you to kite across its width. It can handle around 30-40 kites. Early mornings and late afternoons are best times, even in peak season you can sneak in a session with only a few others riding.
The whole Lagoon is mostly standing deep and is fully sandy on the bottom. There are Beach Bars around the downwind shoreline so you need to take care not to get to close with your kite.
For all kiters Cumbuco is a dream place to kite - and the village has a lot going on, all based around kitesurfing.
